# Your website doesn't need an audience

There's a strange assumption that everything we publish online should be trying to find an audience.

We're encouraged to grow subscribers, increase traffic, improve engagement and make every post discoverable. Even a personal blog can start to feel like a small media company.

But having a website doesn't have to be a performance.

You can write something that only a handful of people read. You can publish something because you wanted to remember it. You can spend an afternoon making a page that nobody visits very often.

The value of a website isn't necessarily measured by how many people see it.

Sometimes it's enough that it's yours.
